DEJI OF AKURE AT 10

Oba Aladetoyinbo is the 47th and current Deji of the ancient city of Akure. He ascended the throne of his forebear and made a triumph entry into the ancient palace on 8th July, 2015 having being selected as the unanimous choice of all the Kingmakers, thus, making him the first ever monarch to have been unanimously selected without any dissenting voice.

Akure: a city engraved by rocks

Rock engravings dating back to the Mesolithic period, have been discovered on the outskirts of Akure. Also the oldest Homo sapiens fossil ever found in West Africa thus far was discovered in Akure dating back to around 11,000 years ago. Akure was founded by Omoremilekun Omoluwabi (Asodeboyede Ajapada)

FOUNDER

Akure was founded by Omoremilekun Omoluwabi (Asodeboyede Ajapada)

ONDO-STATE CAPITAL

Akure became the state capital of Ondo-State in 1976 after the creation of the new state.

OLDEST PALACE IN WESTERN REGION

The Deji’s palace, according to history was built around 1150 AD by the first traditional ruler of Akure Kingdom, Omoremilekun Omoluwabi (Asodeboyede Ajapada) The palace has housed no fewer than 47 kings and it has over 15 courtyards, with each having its unique purpose.

FIRST CHURCH IN AKURE

Christianity came to Akure in 1897 through Rev (later Archdeacon) T.A.J.Ogunbiyi and was accompanied by Mr I.I.Cudjoe. St David's Cathedral Anglican Church is the first church in the history of Akure and it was founded in the year 1897.

FIRST MOSQUE IN AKURE

Islam got to Akure in 1895 through one Alhaji Lawani,an Ilorin man,he established the old mosque at Arakale/Oke Aro junction beside Cash hold filling station.Late Chief Imam AbdulSalaam Alake was the first indigenous Chief Imam of Akure kingdom.

FIRST SECONDARY SCHOOL IN AKURE

St.Thomas Aquinas College, named after a patron saint, St. Thomas of Aquinas (1225 to 1274) was established in January 1951.The College was founded by the Catholic Diocese of Ondo under the leadership of His Lordship, The Most Rev. Thomas Hughes who was able to convince the then Deji of Akure, His Royal Highness, Oba Afunbiowo Adesida to grant him a piece of land for the project.
